Judge Keila D. Cosme

Judge Keila D. Cosme was appointed to the Sixth District Court of Appeals by Governor Ted Strickland on October 30, 2009, and she took the bench on November 16, 2009. She is the first Hispanic American to serve on any of Ohio's 12 district courts of appeals. Judge Cosme received her bachelor's degree from Boston University in 1990 and her JD degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1994.

Judge Cosme has devoted her professional life to advocating for the rights of working people and their families. She served as a partner with the law firm of Cosme, D'Angelo and Szollosi Co., L.P.A. from 2001 until her appointment in 2009.

Judge Cosme was born and reared in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico in 1968. She is the first generation college graduate in her family. She moved to Massachusetts at age 17 to attend Boston University. There were many challenges along the road, including learning the language while attending college. Judge Cosme worked very hard to overcame those obstacles and completed a double bachelorís degree program from B.U. in political science and sociology in just four years. During this time, she worked part time in the Office of Career Services at the College of Communications, and for the United States Department of Defense.

Following graduation, Judge Cosme worked for a year on the Boston Stock Exchange for ABC Securities as an office clerk, and later at Scudder, Stevens & Clark, before settling in Ohio. She attended the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law from 1991 to 1994. During her time in law school, she worked for the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, and also as a research assistant for Dean Stephen Steinglass. After law school, Judge Cosme accepted a staff attorney position in the litigation department of Calfee, Halter & Griswold, L.L.P. in Clevelan where she remained for three years handling complex commercial litigation.

In 1998, she opened her office as a sole-practitioner for several years representing individuals, helping start-up companies become established, and as a Guardian Ad Litem, appointed through the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas, Juvenile Division until 2001 when the law firm of Cosme, D'Angelo & Szollosi Co., L.P.A. was established.

In addition to her professional career, Judge Cosme is blessed to have a loving husband and two beautiful sons, Roberto and Diegonisio. She is the product of the many opportunities afforded by this great nation. Judge Cosme has seen life from the perspectives of a large corporate litigator, as well as a loving mother; as a minority, yet educated among the privileged. She has advocated on behalf of impoverished children from broken homes with no voice, as well as for the rights of organized labor and its members. All of these perspectives shape her goal of equal justice, as the underlying experiences have impacted who she has become. Judge Cosme sees her appointment to the Sixth District Court of Appeals as a historical opportunity to bring diversity of culture and experience to the bench, so it may more closely resemble the community it serves.
