Lucinda M. Deason

Dr. Lucinda M. Deason received her doctoral degree in Political Science from Michigan State University in 2000. She also received a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Finance from Wayne State University. Dr. Deason also served in the United States Army and the Airforce National Guard for a combined total of 7 years. As a scholar, she has expertise in aging, health, and public policy. She received the American Public Health Association (APHA) Gerontological Health Section’s Betty Jane Cleckley Minority Issues Research Award Finalist plaque for writing one of the best papers on aging and minority health. She served as an Aging expert panel member for the American Society on Aging Health Care Network on Multicultural Aging. Dr. Deason presented professional papers at the Gerontological Society on Aging, APHA, Midwest Political Science Association, American Political Science Association, and the Conference on Minority Public Administrators, just to mention a few. She has also conducted workshops on cultural competence for education, health, and social service professionals. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Administration, fellow and research committee co-chair for the Institute for Lifespan Development and Gerontology at the University of Akron. She is also the Coordinator of the M.A. in Urban Studies. Additionally, Dr. Deason serves as a member of the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Multicultural Nursing and Health and the Journal of Public Management and Social Policy and was included in the 57th edition of Who’s Who in America. She has published articles and encyclopedic entries in the International Journal of Diversity in Organisations, Communities, and Nations, International Journal of Organization Theory and Behavior, Behavioral Sciences and the Law, Journal of the American Society of Professional Emergency Planners, Black Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia (2nd Edition), and the Journal of Public Management and Social Policy. Her current activities and interests relate to cultural competence, quality of life and care in nursing homes, health disparities, health literacy, diabetes, childhood obesity and HIV/AIDS.
