Ms. Kimberly C. Shumate

Ms. Kimberly C. Shumate is Associate Legal Counsel for The Ohio State University, handling all labor and employment matters for the University. In this position, Ms. Shumate manages the University's employment litigation, including handling EEO and administrative charges, advising the administration regarding employment issues and advising regarding employment policy.

Ms. Shumate was formerly with the law firm of Porter, Wright, Morris and Arthur where she represented large and medium sized businesses in employment matters. Ms. Shumate is a 1989 graduate of Northwestern University, earning a B.A. in Political Science, and a 1992 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Law. In 2001, Ms. Shumate was awarded the Outstanding Recent Alumna Award by the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University.

Ms. Shumate is active in the legal community. She is currently serving as Secretary-Treasurer of the Columbus Bar Association, after two terms on its Board of Governors. In 2004, she will become the Association's first African-American female President. Ms. Shumate is currently a Columbus Bar Foundation Fellow. She is serving her second term on the the Ohio State Bar Association's CLE Advisory Committee and is also an Ohio State Bar Association Fellow. Ms. Shumate is past president of the Women Lawyers of Franklin County and served two terms on the Ohio State Bar Association Council of Delegates.

Ms. Shumate is also active in the community, as a member and Secretary of the Rosemont Center Board of Trustees and as Chair of the Columbus Area Alumni Admissions Council for Northwestern University. She is currently serving her second term on the DKMM Solid Waste District Advisory Committee for Delaware County, Ohio. Ms. Shumate resides in Powell, Ohio with her husband, Keith Shumate, and their sons, Sheridan and Kyle.
