W. Dean Kendrick
While living in Akron, Dean served on the advisory board for the Coming Together Project, which was initially sponsored by the Akron Beacon Journal and based on a series of award winning articles written by the Journal on race relations in Akron. The Coming Together Project, under the direction of Dr. Fannie Brown, was the catalyst for then president Bill Clinton’s visit to Akron to emphasis his race relations campaign in 1997. Initially as the Scholarship Manager, and now as the Assistant Director of Scholarships, Dean works closely with Mr. Clarence Terry, the Director of Minority Undergraduate Recruitment and with Dr. Lisa Chavers, Director of Project Search, a minority graduate recruitment program at BGSU. She also interacts with the Center for Multicultural and Academic Initiatives, under the direction of Dr. Bettina Shuford. Ms. Kendrick serves as the treasurer of the Africana Faculty and Staff Caucus at BG, which has as one of its goals, the increase and retention of faculty, staff and students of color. She also serves on the advisory board of the Academic Initiative in Math and Science (AIMS) Program which is designed to increase the number of women and minorities enrolled in and who graduate from science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. Dean graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Secondary Education, English. She has 2 grown children and 5 grandchildren in Cleveland, Ohio.
