State of the State Conference Home

Barry L. Richardson, Ph.D.
Assistant VP for Multicultural Affairs
The Medical College of Ohio at Toledo




     Dr. Barry Richardson has been a part of the faculty and
administration of The Medical College of Ohio (MCO) for 23 years. He came
to MCO in 1977 from The University of Akron, where he had been a Assistant
Professor in the department of Biology. Presently, he is the Assistant
Vice President for Multicultural Affairs and as Associate Professor of
Physiology and Molecular Medicine. Previous administrative posts at MCO
have included Associate Dean of Admissions and Minority Affairs and Interim
Director for the Study Management Center.

At MCO, Dr. Richardson has functioned at the center of the efforts
to diversity the student population and, most recently, his office
coordinated a institution wide diversity training initiative. He has been
actively involved in a number of internal and external organizations designed
to promote diversity in medical education. This includes: Association of
American Medical Colleges, Central Association of Advisors for the Health
Professions, National Association of Medical Minority Educators, MCO
Multicultural Affairs Advisory Committee, MCO Student Affairs Diversity
Committee, MOC Affirmative Action Committee, MCO Medical Student Misconduct
Committee and MCO Student Awards Committee. He also serves as a member of
the Student Information Systems Committee, MD/PH.D. Committee, Curriculum
Committee and is the faculty advisor to the Student National Medical
Association.

Dr. Richardson's publication and presentation interests have
included such topics as "Predicting First-Year Medical School Performance
from MCAT Scores", "A Medical Integration Program for At-Risk Students",
"Career Counseling for Minority Students", and "Computerization of
Admissions Offices". He has also been active in his community, and has
served with distinction in such roles as: Lecturer for the University of
Toledo Excel-Aging Institute, PTO Community member for Scott High School,
past chair of the Health Education Committee for the American Heart
Association, and member of the board for the Cordelia Martin Health Center.

Dr. Richardson is a native of Uhrichsville, Ohio. He attended Ohio
University where he received his B.A degree. He received his Ph.D. in
Zoology from The Ohio State University.
